The King of All the People of God

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 5:1-16

Theme:  The King whom the Lord is with shall rule over the people of God and lead them to victory and abundance because the Lord has graciously chosen to bless the elect through his holy reign.

Structure/points: The failure of Israel to answer the call of God to make David their king had taken a devastating toll upon them.  After civil war and the loss of key leaders, how could anything good happen to Israel?  How could they become a kingdom of any note after they had suffered such severe consequences for their sin?  And yet, the Lord had decreed that David would rule all of His people in His name, and that He, the Lord Himself, would do good for Israel through His anointed.  When the time came for David to become king of a united Israel, we see the beginning of the great grace that the Lord intended to give His covenant people, despite their sins.

  1. Israel anoints David
  2. David conquers Jerusalem
  3. The Lord prospers David
