Where do we worship, and what is it like?
Our Sunday morning services are located at 3555 Landco Drive, Unit A, Bakersfield, CA. We are traditional in worship style, but hardly formal.
We primarily sing hymns and Psalms accompanied by a pianist. Our service is rich in its use of Scripture, and we celebrate the Lord’s Supper once a month. We are small enough to take personal prayer requests before worship begins, but we never single out visitors or put people on the spot.
VERY IMPORTANT: From June 28 onward, Providence Reformed Church will be regularly meeting at St. John’s Lutheran Church. Our new address will be 4500 Buena Vista Rd, Bakersfield, CA. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
What are the Sunday service times?
On Sunday morning, our Sunday worship begins at 9:45 am and typically continues until about 11:15 am.
VERY IMPORTANT: When PRC begins meeting at St John’s on June 28, our new meeting time will be 3:00 pm.
What can visitors expect when they visit?
What’s happening this Sunday?
- We regularly celebrate the Lord’s Supper on the second Sunday of the month.
- On the third Sunday of the month, we have a churchwide fellowship meal immediately following the service. Everyone brings a dish to share, potluck style. Visitors are always welcome—come join us, no need to bring anything!
What’s happening this week?
- Intersect Bible Study on Tuesday night.
- Prayer Meeting on Wednesday Night.
- For once-a-month and special events, please take a look at our upcoming events to see what is coming soon. You may also reach out via the Connect With Us page to request information on any event you are curious about.
What is the worship service like?
PRC’s worship service focuses on the reading and preaching of the Bible, the singing of hymns, and prayer to the Lord. We structure our worship in a traditional style, consciously structured around a call to worship, a reminder of our need for grace, a time of offering, congregational prayer, the reading and preaching of the Word of God, and a benediction.
What are the sermons like?
We focus the sermons around a particular passage of Scripture. Each sermon intends to do three things: show us what the particular concerns of the passage are, how Jesus’ redemptive work answers those concerns, and what we, as Christians, should do as a result. Sermons typically last about 40 minutes.
What should I wear?
Most people dress casually or ‘business casual,’ but feel free to come as you are!
Is there a nursery for young children?
There is a nursery offered for children three and under, staffed by volunteer members of our church. However, little ones are always welcome in the service.
Who are the leaders of the church?
- Rev. Jonathan Key has served as the pastor at PRC since 2023.
- We have three ruling elders and two deacons. You can find their names and pictures on the Leadership page.
What is the best way to contact each of these officers?
The best way to contact an individual leader would be to use the Connect With Us form and specify whom you are trying to reach and how we can help you. We will inform the appropriate officer that you are trying to reach him, and he will contact you as soon as possible.
What are our beliefs?
We believe that the Five Solas of the Reformation (Sola Scriptura, Sola Fide, Sola Gratia, Solus Christus, and Soli Deo Gloria) are an excellent brief summary of the teachings of Scripture. These teach:
- That the Bible alone is the authority in all matters of faith and belief.
- That all mankind, born dead in their trespasses and sins, are saved only by faith in the saving work of Christ Jesus.
- That salvation is in no way merited by any work or works of man; salvation is solely a matter of the undeserved grace of God the Father for the unworthy.
- That Jesus Christ must be confessed as the only Savior given by God so that man may be saved.
- That God ordained man’s salvation so that He alone may be glorified and worshiped.
What makes the church distinctive?
We are a conservative and confessional church, meaning we use confessions to help us explain and summarize what we believe the Bible teaches. Scripture alone is the Word of God. Our confessional standards are the Westminster Confession of Faith and the Westminster Larger and Shorter Catechisms.
What Christian education (aka Sunday School) classes are available?
- Following our morning worship, we offer Adult Sunday School, typically starting around 11:30 am. This short break allows everyone time to stretch and enjoy a snack. We pause Sunday School for a churchwide fellowship meal on the third Sunday of each month.
- Currently, we do not have a Children’s Sunday School, but we look forward to offering it as attendance grows!
- Interested in learning more about our church? Pastor Jon offers a New Members’ Class upon request—just let us know if you’d like to join!
Are Bible studies available?
On Tuesday nights, we have our Intersect meeting to study the Bible, theology, and similar topics. This meeting takes place over Microsoft Teams from 6:30 pm to 8:00 pm. Please contact Pastor Jon for details on the current study topic and if you want to join.
