The Lord Shall Go Before You

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 5:17-25

Theme:  Because the Lord is a warrior who fights for His people, He has decisively conquered every opponent who seeks to undermine the King whom He established to lead Israel.

Structure/points:   For many decades, the Philistines were the greatest external threat that the Israelites had to resist.  Upon learning that David had been anointed king of all Israel, the Philistines took action to kill him and subjugate Israel.  But 2 Samuel 5:17-25 shows us the doom of the Philistines and the end of the threat they posed to Israel.  It’s no surprise that under David, the famous warrior, the Philistines were defeated.  But really, this is not so much David’s win as it is the Lord’s.  Throughout this passage, we will see the Lord taking action, the Lord fighting, the Lord conquering, and the Lord praised for His salvation of His people.  2 Samuel 5:17-25 describes two battles between Israel and Philistia, and these battles will frame our sermon.

  1. The Battle of Baal-Perazim
  2. The Battle of the Balsam Trees
