When the Desire for Sin is Unrestrained…

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 11:1-27

Theme: Because the holiest of saints are capable of committing the greatest of sins, all believers must put their sins to death, lest they indulge their lusts and reap death as a result.

Structure/points:  According to the Bible, David was a godly, holy man.  He loved the Lord and followed Him carefully; life in Israel under his reign was quite good.  Few biblical figures reach the heights of David in their piety before God.  And that makes what happens in 2 Samuel 11 all the more shocking. How could a man as holy as David sin so seriously as this?  This chapter is a reminder of the power of our sin and a warning to beware our own sinful desires.  In the fall of a hero, we need to see our own capacity for great evil, lest we follow David on this road that leads ultimately to death.

  1. David’s uncontrolled lusts
  2. David’s escalating wickedness
  3. David’s calloused heart
