An Entirely Unnecessary War

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 10:1-19

Theme: Though the nations reject the kingship of the Lord’s Anointed, God will subdue their rebellion against Himself and give them into the hands of the Davidic king

Structure/points:  2 Samuel 10 functions as a connection between David’s early and later reign.  On one hand, it shows us shows the same spiritual earnestness and military success that defined David’s youth.  On the other hand, these events set the stage for the tragedies that haunt David’s old age.  But this is a good thing, because it demonstrates that the Lord can act in the best of times and worst of times and yet remain the same Almighty God.  It shows us that the same gospel was at work throughout all of David’s life, in his youth and old age.  Ultimately, brothers and sisters, this chapter is about the Lord and about His dealings with the nations through the King He’d anointed. This will be seen through:

  1. Ammon’s declaration of war
  2. Israel’s dependance upon God
  3. David’s victory over Syria
