Those Awaiting the Consolation of Israel

Sermon Text: Luke 2:22-38

Theme: Because Jesus is the salvation that the Lord promised His people in ages past, the people of God rejoice that they have been redeemed and consoled by His appearance in the flesh.

Structure/points: Luke 2:22-38 tells the story of how Jesus was received by the OT communion of saints, the believers who looked for the Christ whom God had promised to send them.  When they recognized Jesus for who He was, they rejoiced that He had come at last. Everything they’d been taught by God to expect came to them in this child, and they glorified God for it.  Though He was less than two months old in the events of our passage, Jesus looms mightily over the narrative in three ways.

  1. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law
  2. Jesus is the salvation of God
  3. Jesus is the divider of Israel
