Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 24:1-25
Theme: The reign of King David proves that mankind’s salvation from sin has always depended upon God’s unfailing desire to show mercy to whomever cries to Him for forgiveness.
Structure/points: 2 Samuel 24 brings us to the end of David’s story in the Samuels. But the narrator doesn’t close his story on a high note about the glory and wisdom of David. Instead, 2 Samuel concludes with a story of David committing serious sin and in need of God’s mercy. But a greater message than “David was a sinner” is proclaimed by David’s life in general and this passage in particular. Here we find a promise of God’s mercy that should prove familiar and necessary to hear again and again.
- Sin Confessed (1-10)
- Judgment Restrained (11-17)
- Atonement Provided (18-25)
