The Lord Has Rejected Us!

Sermon Text: Psalm 60:1-12

Theme:  Though the Lord may reject His people for a season, His promise to rescue them and give them victory over their enemies inspires them to confidently pray to Him for help

Structure/points:  Though David’s reign was marked by victory over Israel’s enemies and blessing for Israel, at some point, Israel suffered a significant military defeat that left them reeling with shock.  In Psalm 60, the whole covenant community cries out to God, and as king, David leads them in their request for help.  The whole covenant community feels helpless and abandoned, and only the Lord their God can meet their need for help, reassurance, comfort, and leadership.  Yet there is more to this Psalm than just a communal lament.  Within the title of Psalm 60, David gives us a clue to how to read it: “For instruction.”  This Psalm is intended to teach the reader about God’s promises to His people so that they may pray to Him confidently.

  1. Israel’s plea for help
  2. God’s holy declaration
  3. Israel’s renewed confidence
