The King Has Died: Good News or Bad News?

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 1:1-16

Theme: David showed himself to have the heart of a godly king through his righteous grief and judgment upon hearing of the death of Saul

Structure/points:  With the demise of Saul came the time for David to receive the kingdom of Israel from the Lord.  In the first few chapters of 2 Samuel, the Bible goes to great pains to show that David had nothing to do with Saul’s death and didn’t seize the kingdom as pagan kings do.  Then Scripture goes further to show us the heart of David.  How did he react when he heard of Saul’s death?  2 Samuel 1:1-16 serves to show us that God had made David to be a godly man who was ready to rule His people.

  1. David learns of Saul’s death
  2. David mourns for Saul’s death
  3. David avenges Saul’s death
