How the Mighty Have Fallen!

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 1:17-27

Theme: Upon learning of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan, David wrote a lament to help himself and Israel process their sorrow over the tragedy.

Structure/points:  Death, any death, is the tragic consequence of living in a world marred by sin, an unnatural but unavoidable invader in God’s good creation.  The people of God grieve when they are confronted with death, especially the deaths of those they love.  We grieve, as Paul says, with hope, because of the greatness of our God and the promise of the Gospel of Jesus, but we truly grieve.  Last week we read of how David learned of the deaths of Saul and Jonathan.  After his initial shock, he wrote a song of lamentation for the dead to process his grief over them.  We will consider three aspects of David’s lamentation for the tragedy at Mt. Gilboa.

  1. Lamentation for Israel’s disgrace
  2. Lamentation for Saul’s glory
  3. Lamentation for Jonathan’s friendship
