Our Daily Bread

Text: Matthew 6:11

Theme: Because God is the giver and sustainer of human life, the fourth petition instructs us to ask Him to provide everything that is needed for us to live godly, contended lives.

Structure/points:  The Lord’s prayer is structured so as to teach us that the glory of the Lord is the single most important thing that anyone can pray for.  But that doesn’t mean that the needs that we have as human beings are unimportant; far from it.  Jesus commanded His disciples to pray for their all needs before the Lord.  No less than our spiritual needs, the Lord teaches us to pray that our physical needs would be met.  The 4th petition teaches the people of God what they are to ask for in relation to their comfort and temporal blessings, and how to submit themselves to God’s provision of such.  We will see this through our three points:

  1. The meaning of daily bread
  2. The God who provides daily bread
  3. How we are to receive daily bread
