Not My Will But Yours Be Done

Sermon Text: Matthew 6:10b

Theme: The third petition shows Christians that in order to copy heaven’s pattern of obedience to the Lord, they must pray that the Lord would subdue them to His holy will on earth.

Structure/points: Words like “obedience” and “submission” are unpopular words for people to hear.  Submission of one person to another implies dominance, power, authority, and the right to expect obedience.  And free people, people with rights, don’t submit to anything or anyone.  Even among Christians, these words are not popular. But the Lord is a king, even the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.  He rules over His creation as supreme ruler. The Lord’s prayer, which has already revealed the majesty of that King and the extent of His holy Kingdom, now teaches us about the will of our King through the 3rd petition, “Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.”  God has made known and continues to make known what He wants done in His kingdom, and this petition teaches what we are to pray for in relation to the will of our King. We’ll have three points to help explain the burden of the 3rd petition.

  1. The will of the Lord
  2. The example of heaven
  3. The obedience of the earth
