Confessing Historic Reformation Christianity: Salvation by Grace Alone, Through Faith Alone, in Christ Alone, Founded on Scripture Alone, for the Glory of God Alone.

Not By Bread Alone

Sermon Text: Matthew 4:1-4

Theme:  Jesus proved that the true Son of God trusts His Father in Heaven to provide for Him by refusing to use His messianic powers to avoid the suffering appointed to Him.

Structure/points: At the Jordan River, Jesus was baptized and identified as the beloved Son of God. But what did that mean?  How did He understand Himself and His relationship with His Father?   Having been publicly announced as the Messiah, would Jesus remain true to the mission that His Father called Him to walk?  Or would He choose His own path and make what He wanted of His Christly mission?  God intended to prove the uniqueness of Jesus’ obedience through a period of intense suffering and temptation.  After a forty day fast, the devil sought to undermine Jesus’ faith in His Father’s provision.  How did Jesus respond to this temptation?

  1. Satan’s temptation to trust self
  2. Jesus’ resolve to trust the Lord
