Do Not Presume Upon the Lord

Sermon Text: Matthew 4:5-7

Theme:  Jesus proved that the true Son of God does not demand that His Father submit to unholy testing; instead, He rests in confident submission to the faithful promises of a trustworthy God.

Structure/points: Temptation is rarely a matter of saying “No” once.  As often than not, sin must be resisted continually because the pressure to give in doesn’t relent because you stayed faithful at first.  This was as true for Jesus as it is for you and I.  While Jesus was in the desert, He resisted the devil’s temptation to use His miraculous powers to conjure bread for Himself.  But the evil one didn’t just fold and go home at Jesus’ resistance.  Instead, he changed tactics and tried to get Jesus to sin in a different way.  But once again, the Son of David maintained His unblemished obedience to His Father and proved why He was alone worthy to be the Savior of mankind.

  1. Satan’s temptation to test God
  2. Jesus’s resolve to submit to God
