My Hand Shall Not Be Against the Lord’s Anointed

Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 24:1-22

Theme:  When provided an opportunity to seize the kingdom of Israel from his persecutor, David chose to entrust his wellbeing and his future crown to the righteous oversight of the Lord his God.

Structure/points:  David lived about seventy years, so there’s a lot about his life that the Bible doesn’t tell us.  But those things that we DO know about David were preserved for us because they were important moments for David personally and necessary for us to read about.  Our passage today tells us about a moment in David’s life that was especially character defining for him.  When faced with great temptation, how would he respond?  David’s response not only tells us much about his character but also about the God whom David entrusted himself to.  The two events that describe this for us in 1 Samuel 24 are…

  1. David’s sparing of Saul
  2. David’s confrontation with Saul
