Confessing Historic Reformation Christianity: Salvation by Grace Alone, Through Faith Alone, in Christ Alone, Founded on Scripture Alone, for the Glory of God Alone.

For the Sake of Jonathan

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 9:1-13

Theme: David’s kind treatment of Mephibosheth portrays the undeserved covenant kindness that God shows those whom He seeks and adopts as His children.

Structure/points:  Once fully established as king of Israel, David sought out a surviving member of Saul’s household.  Unlike his contemporaries, who ruthlessly eliminated rivals, David was not motivated to do this by hatred or political expedience.  He sought to show kindness and mercy that had been shaped by covenant.  He desired to bless because promises had been made by David to Jonathan son of Saul.  David had been shaped by how God had shown covenant love and undeserved mercy to His people.  As God had been kind to David, so David would show kindness to his enemy.

  1. David’s desire to show covenant kindness
  2. Mephibosheth’s reception of covenant kindness

From June 28 onwards, PRC will be moving to a new worship location.
