The Last Words of Samuel the Judge

Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 12:1-25

Theme:  Samuel urged Israel to repent of their grievous sin against the Lord so that they and their king could follow Him anew.

Structure/points:  Samuel was stepping down as a judge, but he didn’t cease to be a prophet or to do a prophet’s work.  No matter how much Israel wanted to think otherwise, they had indeed sinned against the Lord, willfully and rebelliously.  In order to follow the Lord rightly, Israel needed to hear Samuel offer them both rebuke and comfort.  He did this through three sections in his speech.  These are…

  1. Samuel’s acquittal
  2. Samuel’s prosecution
  3. Samuel’s reassurance
