Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 23:1-7
Theme: Through David’s final words, the Lord testifies that He would raise a righteous king from David’s house to reign over mankind, guaranteeing this through His covenant.
Structure/points: 2 Samuel 23:1-7 are called, “the last words of David.” After writing countless songs that were recognized as the inspired word of the Lord, this passage may have been the last thing he wrote. In that sense, we should approach these 7 verses with the solemnity of a man’s final public address. Yet David’s final words aren’t looking backwards. He looks forwards to what the Lord will do in the future. As 2 Samuel’s end looms closer, we again glimpse the working of the Lord through David’s kingship.
- The prophet of the Lord (1-3a
- The blessing of a righteous king (3b-4)
- The guarantees of the covenant (5)
- The fate of the worthless (6-7)
