Sermon Text: Matthew 6:10a
Theme: The second petition of the Lord’s Prayer teaches the church to pray that the kingdom of Christ may advance without obstruction so that the Lord may be glorified through the kingship of His Son.
Structure/points: A major theme of the Bible is God as King and His right to rule His creation and His people. In the context of the Lord’s prayer, the 2nd petition of the Lord’s prayer, “Your kingdom come,” teaches us how the Lord is pleased to glorify Himself. If the 1st petition teaches that God’s name is to be hallowed, then the 2nd petition teaches what means He uses to hallow His name. God hallows His own name by establishing His kingdom and extending its borders. As the people of God, we are taught by Jesus to pray for this kingdom, that it would come as the Lord intends. We will learn three things from the 2nd petition that Christians ought to pray for.
- The Owner of the Kingdom
- The Expansion of the Kingdom
- The Future of the Kingdom
