The Helper and Upholder of My Life

Sermon Text: Psalm 54:1-7

Theme: Though all other means of rescue fail, the believer in the God of Israel will find that He is an all-powerful, faithful helper against the treachery of wicked men.

Structure/points: Psalm 54 was written as David’s reflection upon the Ziphites’ treachery when he learned they had tried to hand him over to the king.  David had no earthly way to deal with the Ziphites’ betrayal except to flee from them.  But David had a Savior to turn to in the Lord, and he poured his heart in prayer to him. From the poetic ebb and flow of the psalm, we find three points.

  1. David’s prayer for rescue
  2. David’s declaration of faith
  3. David’s vow to give thanks
