Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 21:15-22

Theme: The kingdom of the devil wields intimidation and power against the people of God, but the Lord has defeated even the mightiest foes through the mediatory reign of His anointed king.

Structure/points:  2 Samuel 21:15-22 is part of a summary of David’s kingdom and, really, God’s reign over His people through David.  In it, we see the Philistines for the final time in 1-2 Samuel.  Once the “big-bad” of Israel’s story, the Philistines get a mere eight verses describing four failed attempts to defeat Israel in war.  Through the defeat of Israel’s enemies, we remember that there is the ongoing war between the kingdom of the Lord and the kingdom of the devil.  We are also told, in no uncertain terms, which side will be victorious and why.

  1. The power of the giants
  2. The lamp of Israel
  3. The defeat of the Philistines
