One God Only

Sermon Text: Matthew 4:8-11

Theme:  Jesus proved that the true Son of Heaven would inherit the Kingdom of God by obeying the command to worship the Lord His God alone. 

Structure/points: Our advent series has focused on Jesus’ formal inauguration as the Christ.  He was acknowledged as the beloved Son of God, and then exposed to the temptations of the devil for a period of time.  Till now, we’ve seen Jesus resist the devil’s temptations, but the first two temptations were rather subtle.  Now the gloves come off.  In the third temptation, the devil dropped any pretense of charm and persuasion.  The final temptation was a brute force, straightforward attempt to convince the Son of God to sin against His Father.  But again, we see that Jesus withstood the test set before Him.
