Once Impossible, Now Inevitable

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 17:5-29

Theme:  The Lord has decreed the defeat of every wicked, rebellious king, ensuring that His people will be ruled in His name by a righteous ruler whose kingdom is established forever.

Structure/points: Since Absalom stole the throne of Israel from David, he made it plain that he sought the death of his father.  At his right hand was the brilliant politician Ahithophel.  These men and all who followed them had set their hearts to kill David.  So far, they’ve seemed almost unstoppable, but no longer.  Absalom’s kingdom was a rebellion against the Lord Himself.  He and his followers were trying to overturn God’s decision to appoint David as king and replace the eternal dynasty the Lord had covenanted to make for His servant with a dynasty of their own making.  But they could not and would not be able to succeed.  Their doom was inevitable.
