Sermon Text: Matthew 6:9
Theme: The address and first petition of the Lord’s Prayer teach us that whatever we pray for, we pray that our Heavenly Father would ensure that His glory takes priority over our needs.
Structure/points: When Jesus taught His people to pray the Lord’s Prayer, He was giving us a basic framework for prayer. When we pray, these things should be kept in mind. On one hand, Jesus gave us freedom in our prayer, and doesn’t require we pray the Lord’s Prayer slavishly. On the other hand, the six petitions of the Lord’s Prayer cover just about anything a person could think to ask God for in one way or another, and they are important. Moreover, this prayer is carefully organized, giving priority to some requests above others. The preface of the Lord’s Prayer and its First Petition will show us what is most important to keep in mind whenever we pray. We will have two points to explain this.
- The identity of the Lord
- The primacy of the Lord
