In Defense of the Name and Armies of God

Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 17:1-37

Theme: When the people of God were reviled by a Philistine giant, the Living God raised up His own champion who would glorify His holy name by slaying the Philistine.

Structure/points:  The events of 1 Samuel 17 show us a time when the soul of God’s people was at great risk.  More was happening than an underdog fight or a simple military operation. The conflict between the world and the people of God was distilled down to the worldviews of and conflict between the armies of Israel and Philistia and their chosen champions.  As we read the first half of 1 Samuel 17, we will learn about the three main characters…

  1. Goliath: the Philistine Giant
  2. David: the man of faith
  3. The Lord: the Living God
