Covenant Friends Forever

Sermon Text: 1 Samuel 20:18-42

Theme:  Jonathan demonstrated his covenant loyalty to David, the Lord’s anointed, by protecting him from the danger of Saul’s murderous wrath. 

Structure/points:  With their covenant reaffirmed, and provision for the future made, Jonathan and David turned once again to the matter at hand.  Was Saul truly trying to kill David, or were David’s recent experiences all a horrible misunderstanding?  Jonathan was determined to find out and do whatever needed to be done in order to uphold his covenant with his friend.  In this passage, we find three main scenes that show us Jonathan’s covenant loyalty in action. 

  1. Jonathan arranged signals for David
  2. Jonathan sounded out Saul for David
  3. Jonathan sent David on his way
