Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 18:1-18
Theme: The Lord secured the reign of the king whom He had covenanted with through the humiliating defeat and death of the traitor.
Structure/points: In 2 Samuel 7, God had promised that He would build a house for King David. Despite David’s lack of merit, God covenanted to raise a son of David’s body and establish the kingdom of His people through him. The rise of Absalom probably called God’s love and promise into question in the minds of some. Here was a son of David who rejected the Lord, who blasphemed God, and committed horrific crimes in public. The armies of Absalom and David were headed for a contest that allowed no stalemates. And one side was hopelessly outmatched because it had declared war on the Lord’s king. The time for Absalom’s defeat and David’s rescue had come.
