Sermon Text: Romans 1:16-17
Theme: The gospel of Jesus Christ demonstrates the power of God by revealing that whomever believes in Jesus alone for salvation will be justified from his sin by the Lord.
Structure/points: When we talk about the Reformation, we often talk about Martin Luther’s discovery that “the righteous shall live by faith” and, as a result, the doctrine of justification. Luther did not invent this doctrine out of nowhere, but it is fair to say that God used Luther’s “aha” moment over Romans 1:17 to bring greater clarity to our understanding of justification. Even though Christians have further developed Luther’s teaching over the last 500-plus years, we stand on the shoulders of what God showed him in the Bible, namely, that the righteous shall live by faith. This Reformation Sunday, let us turn to the Scripture passage that brought newfound clarity to our understanding of what God does for those He saves in Christ Jesus.
