The King’s Charge

Sermon Text: 1 Kings 2:1-12

Theme: David’s charge to Solomon commands the recipients of God’s steadfast love to carefully execute their duties to God and man alike in accordance with the Scriptures, so that the Lord may bless them.

Structure/points: In David’s old age, his health declined and left him bedridden.  When his time to die drew near, he summoned his Solomon to his side. 1 Kings 2:1-12 records David’s last words to Solomon.  These are the instructions of a king to his successor on how he is to conduct himself as the ruler of the people of God.  With his dying words, David gave not pious advice but a charge to Solomon.  The new king was under obligation to perform the duties assigned to him by his predecessor and father.

  1. Solomon charged to walk in God’s ways (vv. 1-4)
  2. Solomon charged to deal justly with man (vv. 5-12)
