The Judgments of the King

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 16:1-14

Theme:  Even though the greatest human king will make flawed judgments, the people of God humbly trust the pronouncement of the Judge of all the earth to be right and perfect at all times.

Structure/points: The Bible doesn’t suggest that David was a perfect king in exile.  If anything, 2 Samuel 16:1-14 shows that David was capable of both good and bad judgment under pressure.  But as always, Scripture doesn’t tell us what David did as a simple morality tale; “Go, thee, and do (or don’t do) likewise.”  Rather, the passage tells us to not to fix our eyes on David but on the God of David.  David’s kingship, with its good points and bad, his good and bad rulings, always brings us back to the perfect kingship of God and teaches us to trust in the Lord in a way that we cannot trust in any mere man.
