The End to the Heir’s Exile

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 14:1-33

Theme:  In order to secure an heir for the throne of Israel, King David ended the banishment of his murderous son and restored a prideful sinner to prominence within his family.

Structure/points: As David struggled to decide what to do about Absalom’s murder of Amnon, Israel was left not knowing who would inherit David’s throne after he died.  Absalom, the oldest surviving son, was the obvious choice, but how could he be David’s heir while he remained in exile for murdering his brother?   Was it even wise to consider him for the throne or to return him to Jerusalem?  Are the events of 2 Samuel 14 to be considered in line with God’s character or not?  As we delve in a difficult part of Scripture, we will have two points to guide us:

  1. The plea for the heir
  2. The character of the heir
