Sermon Text: Titus 1:7-8
Theme: Before the church appoints a man to be a steward in the house of God, they must access his character so that it may be demonstrated that he is above reproach, as befits one of God’s overseers.
Structure/points: When the Church elects men to be ruling elders or calls them as pastors, we are not hiring members of a steering committee or forming a board of directors. We are choosing men whom Paul says will be overseers and stewards in the house of God. As a result, in Christ’s church, business skills and secular management chops take a backseat to the quality of a man’s character. When accessing the character of a man who may be called as an elder, Paul tells us there are two categories that the church must judge him against.
- What an elder’s character cannot be like
- What an elder’s character must be like
