Text: 2 Samuel 3:1-19
Theme: Ambitious people may use the promises of God to benefit themselves, but it is God alone who will accomplish His saving work through the king whom He has appointed to deliver His people.
Structure/points: Abner reckoned himself to be the kingmaker, the man who could give Israel to whomever he pleased. But the Lord of Hosts, the true king of Israel, will show us that He is truly in control of who ruled His people. He ordained this kingdom for the salvation of His people, and nothing would impede that goal, even the arrogant assumptions of men like Abner. May the Lord give us wisdom and faith to see His quiet yet irresistible power behind the unsavory actions of men in our three points:
- Abner’s influence
- David’s demand
- Israel’s desire
