Vengeance is Mine!  I Have Repaid!

Sermon Text: 2 Samuel 13:23-39

Theme: Absalom’s hatred combined with David’s indecision to cause the king’s household to plunge into greater sorrows and throw the people of God into chaos.

Structure/points: For the second time, God’s sword of discipline struck the house of David to punish his sin with Bathsheba, this time through the treachery of Absalom.  For the second time, a son of David indulged to his desire for sin with disastrous consequences.  David’s sins and shortcomings serve to allow the sins of his sons escalate and compound into worse disasters.  Though the name of God is strangely absent from this 2 Samuel 13:23-39, the weight of His discipline can be felt in full.  When He allowed sinners to sin as they wished, the results were devastating.

  1. Absalom’s treacherous feast
  2. David’s paralyzing grief
